If your EV seems to lose range in winter, you are not imagining it. Cold weather reduces usable range for several reasons, and understanding them helps you plan around them.
Why cold hurts range
- Battery chemistry: lithium-ion cells deliver less energy when cold.
- Cabin heating: resistive heaters draw significant power; heat pumps are more efficient.
- Denser air and wet roads: both increase drag and rolling resistance.
How big is the effect?
A loss of 20–30% at around freezing is common, and more in extreme cold or at motorway speeds. Short trips suffer most because the battery and cabin never reach an efficient temperature.
Tips
- Pre-heat the car while it is still plugged in.
- Use seat and steering-wheel heaters instead of heating the whole cabin.
- Keep tyre pressures correct and plan extra charging stops on long winter trips.
